Your textbook should be your weapon,
not something to war against.
The mission is to help your students love God with all their hearts, souls, and minds. And many teachers believe they can accomplish that mission with a secular textbook—as long as they’re skilled in detecting the secular agenda and have the ability to refute false views and insert biblical ones. Some even believe the way to train “Christian thinkers” is by using only secular textbooks.
It’s a truism that if you want to recognize the counterfeit, spend a lot of time examining the real thing. Counterfeits change appearance over time, but the “real thing” is always the same. Teaching students biblical truth is the best way to teach them discernment. With a secular text, even the best teacher will be forced to spend as much time “examining the counterfeit” as studying the truth. Why waste that time when—with a Christian textbook—you can have the best of both worlds?
